Torre Salsa Reserve: the wild paradise

The Torre Salsa Nature Reserve, managed by the WWF since 1998, is a mosaic of coastal environments between Siculiana and Montallegro: shifting dunes colonized by sea lilies, limestone cliffs, Mediterranean scrub, and a stretch of transparent sea home to Posidonia oceanica meadows.

The area takes its name from the 16th-century watchtower that watches over the coast from atop a clay promontory. Here, nature dictates the rhythm: no resorts or nightclubs, just the call of seagulls, the rustling of reeds, and the scent of salt air. Visiting Torre Salsa means immersing yourself in a pristine environment where the silence is interrupted only by the waves and the chirping of cicadas. To reach the reserve from Terreforti, simply follow the SP75 for about 25 minutes; the last stretch is unpaved but passable by any car, as long as you proceed slowly.

At the entrance gates, WWF volunteers provide maps and recommended itineraries: the most scenic is the Pine Path, which passes through a grove of Aleppo pines and slopes down to the beach, shaded by tree-like euphorbias. Loggerhead sea turtles lay their eggs here from June to August. The nests are fenced and guarded, but you may occasionally witness the evocative hatching at dawn. If you’re snorkeling, bring a mask and fins: you’ll encounter white sea bream, gilt-head bream, and starfish, while the lucky ones might spot seahorses among the Posidonia oceanica leaves.

Please note that there are no permanent restrooms or bars: water, fruit, and an umbrella must be brought with you, and any waste must be taken home. The reserve is open year-round, but spring and late September offer ideal temperatures and very few visitors. If you’re a photography enthusiast, stop at Belved.
